American (English) remake of the French version HPI series (2021)
Plot
Tells of Morgan, a single mother of three, and how her exceptional mind enables her to help solve a crime by rearranging evidence during her shift as a cleaner for the police. Despite her very high IQ, excellent memory, and extensive knowledge of the arcane, Morgan makes a number of basic legal errors that anyone who has ever watched a legal TV show would know not to make. In episode one, for example, she obtains a document from a locked safe in the suspect/victim’s law office that would never be admissible in court – illegally obtained evidence. Nor could it be used to obtain other evidence – a violation of the legal doctrine of the “fruit of the poisonous tree.” In episode 2, she has to be reminded to wear gloves before handling evidence at the crime scene, and in #3, she removes all documented evidence from the police station, completely breaking the chain of evidence and making anything she removed also inadmissible in court.
Remake of HPI (2021)
This series revolves around Morgan (Kaitlin Olson), a woman who is a night janitor at the LAPD. When she happens to glance at a file, she becomes curious and makes some corrections on a murder report. This leads the department to realize that she has a talent for perceiving, recording and organizing facts, i.e. evidence.
They hire her as a consultant
Imagine Will Hunting meets Adrian Monk. Like Will, she has an exceptional IQ and an insightful mind. Like Monk, she suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder, although not as neurotic as Monk. But she feels like she has to reconcile all the conflicting data (like an itch that needs scratching).
She’s also very assertive
And even though Morgan sometimes feels out of touch with society, she’s very empathetic. I really like this show, although there have been many other police procedurals where a civilian with unusual talents works alongside cops. Morgan’s character is fun to watch. And the cases have interesting resolutions.
The kids are interesting, too
She also has three children, so she’s always juggling work and personal life. In the first episode, her young son actually helps with her case behind the scenes.
