Plot
It follows a group of British intelligence agents who serve as MI5’s dumping ground for their late-career mistakes. Deep under the title “Camera Trainees.” features Alfie Oldman, Gary Oldman’s son. He has appeared on The Graham Norton Show: Kristin Scott Thomas/George Takei/Claudia Winkleman/Jamie Oliver/First Aid Kit (2022).
as well as the more underrated “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)”
Gary Oldman has already proven himself a master of the political and spy thriller subgenres, with a powerful performance in the Oscar-winning “Darkest Hour” (2017). He’s been great at portraying gravitas, charisma, calm under pressure and steadfast efficiency on screen, but Apple TV+’s new offering presents a completely different dimension to the British veteran, laced with dry British wit and wry humor. He never lets go of the elements of espionage thrills.
as it’s made up primarily of disgraced, underachieving brands that no one else seems to want
We follow MI5 agent "Jackson Lamb" (Oldman), who heads a sub-unit within the intelligence agency known as the “Slow Horses”. Lamb seems perfectly happy running routine operations and surveillance operations when his team accidentally gets involved in the kidnapping of a young Muslim man, suspected to be by right-wing fundamentalists. Starring Jonathan Pryce, Kristin Scott-Thomas, Saskia Reeves, Jack Lowden and a host of fine British actors, Slow Horses ensures that it paints vivid character sketches of its motley crew of temperamental agents who have a point to prove, given their sordid pasts.
The supporting cast plays the old master superbly, creating a vivid world that stirs intrigue and causes chuckles at the most unexpected moments
Director James Hawes builds his narrative slowly but surely over six healthy episodes, full of unexpected twists and turns as the stakes rise and the conspiracy grows more intricate as the team hunts down one lead after another. Oldman is blisteringly good as the caustic, trash-talking spymaster who seems to use mockery and contempt as weapons to drive his team to perform. Written by Morwenna Banks; Will Smith; Jonny Stockwood; Mark Denton deserves special praise for finding the right balance between character development, suspense, unexpected twists, and humor.
Highly recommended, and I can’t wait for Season 2!
Apple TV+ has another winner on its hands with "Slow Horses", and "Severance" is clearly one of the best new series of 2022.
