With an estimated budget of €429 million, The Count of Monte Cristo is the most expensive French film of 2024
Plot
After escaping from an island prison where he spent 14 years for being falsely accused of high treason, Edmond Dantès returns as the Count of Monte Cristo to take revenge on the men who betrayed him. When Albert watches Hydee sing and play the guitar, it is very obvious that half the time he is not even touching the strings.
He appears in La grande semaine: Episode #113 (2024)
It is always difficult to approach something as complex as this novel and try to create a coherent film that includes all the plots, subplots and side stories, let alone characters that are true to the book. I enjoyed Richard Chamberlain’s TV movie and the 2002 film, despite some complete plot cuts in both.
Even the 6 hour and 23 minute 1998 miniseries couldn’t tell the whole story, and that’s been my all-time favorite adaptation for the past 25 years
The thing is, in order to fit it into 3 hours, it was clear that some storylines would be cut, characters would be changed, and the narrative would be streamlined. Then there’s the question of whether they did it in a way that would be enjoyable for those who didn’t know the story yet, those who’ve read the book three or four times, and everyone in between.
It’s really great fun and never once did I feel like it was a 3 hour movie
Clearly, the producers understood the ulterior motives and (apart from one minor quibble I had that I’m not going to include as a spoiler) did a great job of honoring the original, while still including a few subplots that I felt they should have cut. Of course, if you’re a purist who hated Lord of the Rings because Peter Jackson changed characters and aspects from being a 100% faithful adaptation of the book, then you won’t like it either.
It also has a great soundtrack, the repetition of which kept me going until the end of the credits
